                                  Supporting CPDTE

Our partner in Ghana is CPDTE - an organisation founded by tutors from teacher training colleges in Cape Coast. In 2023, we formed a partnership with CPDTE to support primary schools in the region.

                                  Education in Cape Coast

Class sizes in Cape Coast often exceed 40 learners and in community schools most teachers are untrained. As a result, learning levels in classrooms are much lower than they could be.

                                  Expanding teacher support

Your team will help CPDTE in running our Inspiring Schools Program to teachers and leaders. You’ll either focus on the literacy program, or the instructional leadership and coaching program.

                                  Program Itinerary

The Ghana program starts with training and orientation, which prepares you to support teachers through a 3-week Institute. Each week you’ll transition to a new phase using workshops and coaching to support teachers and leaders in schools.

                                  Program
                                  Pre-Institute: Training & School Visits

After arrival at Accra Airport, your team will transfer to Oasis Beach in Cape Coast, the capital of the Central Region.

You’ll visit schools and meet the teachers you’ll be working with, and your Team Leaders will give you training and introduce the tools you’ll need for your role.

In the three weeks that follow, you’ll work alongside our local team and partners, CPDTE, to run workshops and use coaching to help teachers and leaders to put techniques into practice in their classrooms.

                                  Week 1: Planning & Workshops

The institute begins with school visits, which are an opportunity to meet with teachers and leaders you’ll be working with. You’ll then prepare to run workshops for teachers and leaders alongside trainers from CPDTE.

If you are on the literacy track, the sessions will focus on the science of reading, and literacy techniques.

Meanwhile, Instructional leadership fellows will run a workshops focused on the science of learning, effective teaching and how to launch and sustain in-school professional development through coaching.

                                  Week 2: In-School Follow-Ups and Coaching

Building on content covered in workshops, you’ll spend time supporting school leaders and teachers to embed techniques from the workshop in their classrooms.

If you are a Literacy Fellows you’ll focus coaching on the techniques involved in systematic phonics instruction and oral language development in the classroom.

Meanwhile, Instructional Leadership Fellows will help school leaders through sessions on classroom climate and assessment informed instruction.

                                  Week 3: Embedding the Program

Having spent the week working with teachers and leaders in schools, you’ll have a good understanding of where school are and have identified opportunities for targeted top-up training and support.

You’ll then support teachers and school leader to establish routines that help make the program stick.

For the literacy program, this means helping the school leaders begin a routine observation with teachers.

Meanwhile Fellows in the the instructional leadership program will focus on planning a whole whole school learning walk routine.

A closing ceremony on the final day of the institute will be a chance to reflect on what you’ve accomplished together before celebrate as team by exploring the historic Cape Coast before you fly out from Accra.

How will I be equipped for my role?

We will provide you with a suite of tools to help you run great workshop sessions and to guide you and the teachers you support through successful peer coaching cycles. Some of the tools include:

                                  • The Inspiring Teaching Framework, our evidence-based set of powerful teaching techniques.
                                  • Workshop guides, grounded in insights from the latest research and designed to help you facilitate meaningful sessions in your unique style.
                                  • Coaching guides embedded within the Inspiring Teaching Framework to seamlessly guide you and the teachers you support through a methodical process.

You’ll be able to keep and use these tools in your school back at home.

What is the Inspiring Teaching Framework?

Each week, you’ll support each teacher through three peer coaching cycles. Through the 3-week institution, you’ll help them practice 27 systematic techniques and put them into action through co-planning, observation, and feedback.

The program is designed to be responsive to each teacher’s individual needs. We will equip you with a set of tools that enable you to be responsive to each teacher’s needs.

How does the peer coaching program work?
Weekly workshops and ongoing school visits allow for authentic coaching cycles, each including in-class observation for tailored support, feedback, deliberate and focused practice, and co-planning to implement new learning.
                                  How do workshops work?

There are three workshop days over the course of the program.

During each workshop day, you’ll facilitate four sessions alongside another Fellow.

Each day’s first session is focused on the science of teaching and learning, whereas the other three sessions are practice sessions.

During the practice sessions, you’ll get teachers practicing powerful techniques, which they’ll go on to put into practice in school.

How many teachers will I support?
You’ll support four teachers who all work at the same schools for the course of the program.
                                  What subjects will I teach?
Fellows focus their coaching on techniques rather than subjects. However, we do match Fellows with teachers based on their areas of expertise, including subject and age group.
                                  What’s provided?
As a Fellow, you’ll be provided with food, accommodation, transport, training and support throughout the program.

                                                                  Expanding teacher support

After arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport, your team will transfer to Usa River.

You’ll visit schools and meet the teachers you’ll be working with, and then your team leaders will give you training and tools you’ll need for your role.

In the three weeks that follow, you’ll run workshops covering 27 powerful teaching techniques. After each workshop, you’ll use coaching to help teachers put techniques into practice in their classrooms.

Institute Week 1: Routines, Explanations & Student Talk

The institute begins with an inspiring opening ceremony, which sets the stage for the weeks to come.

You’ll then co-facilitate a theory session on the science of learning and facilitate engaging sessions on classroom routines, effective explanations, and student talk.

Through the week, you’ll work with teachers in their schools, using coaching to help them to embed techniques from the workshop in their classroom.

After a fulfilling first week in schools, you’ll bond as a team on Safari in Tarangire National Park.

Institute Week 2: Climate, Modelling & Questioning

Building on learnings from your first week, you’ll run a second workshop. You’ll co-lead an interactive session on lesson design, and practice sessions on techniques for modelling, questioning, and creating a positive classroom climate.

During the week, you’ll be back in classrooms using coaching cycles to help teachers put techniques into practice.

After another productive week in schools, the team will head off for a day trip in Moshi to visit a local Coffee Plantation and hike to a nearby waterfall.

Institute Week 3: Scaffolding, Assessment & Peer Coaching

On the final workshop day, you’ll run sessions on creating a motivating classroom climate, scaffolding learning, and assessment-informed teaching.

You’ll support the teachers you’ve been working with as they transition to using peer coaching to support each other on an ongoing basis.

A closing ceremony on the final day of the institute will be a chance to reflect on what you’ve accomplished together.

Before you fly out from Dar es Salaam, head to Zanzibar to for some island life, go on a snorkelling trip and enjoy the sun and sand with the team.

How will I be equipped for my role?

We will provide you with a suite of tools to help you run great workshop sessions and to guide you and the teachers you support through successful peer coaching cycles. Some of the tools include:

What is the Inspiring Teaching Framework?

Each week, you’ll support each teacher through three peer coaching cycles. Through the 3-week institution, you’ll help them practice 27 systematic techniques and put them into action through co-planning, observation, and feedback.

The program is designed to be responsive to each teacher’s individual needs. We will equip you with a set of tools that enable you to be responsive to each teacher’s needs.

How does the peer coaching program work?

                                                                  How do workshops work?

During each workshop day, you’ll facilitate four sessions alongside another Fellow.

Each day’s first session is focused on the science of teaching and learning, whereas the other three sessions are practice sessions.

During the practice sessions, you’ll get teachers practicing powerful techniques, which they’ll go on to put into practice in school.

How many teachers will I support?

                                                                  What subjects will I teach?

The Uganda program starts with training and orientation, which prepares you to support teachers through a 3-week Institute. Each week you’ll move to a new phase and use workshops and coaching to support educators in schools.

                                                                                                  Program

You’ll visit schools and meet the teachers you’ll be working with, and then your team leaders will give you training and tools you’ll need for your role.

In the three weeks that follow, you’ll work alongside, our local team and partners Great Stewards of Hope to run workshops, and use coaching teachers and leaders to put techniques into practice in their classrooms.

You’ll prepare to run workshops for teachers and leaders alongside the Inspiring Teachers Uganda team.

If you on the literacy track, the sessions will focus on the science of reading, and literacy techniques.

Meanwhile, Instructional leadership fellows will run a workshops focused on the science of learning, effective teaching and how to launch and sustain in-school professional development through coaching.

                                                                                                  Week 2: In-School Follow-Ups and Coaching

Building on content covered in workshops you’ll spend time supporting school leader and teachers to embed techniques from the workshop in their classrooms.

If you are a Literacy Fellows you’ll focus coaching on techniques involved in systematic phonics instruction and oral language development in the classroom.

Meanwhile, Instructional Leadership Fellows will help school leaders through sessions on classroom climate and assessment-informed instruction.

                                                                                                  Week 3: Embedding the Program

Having spent the two weeks working with teachers and leaders in schools, you’ll have a good understanding of where school are and have identified opportunities for targeted top-up training and support.

You’ll then support teacher and school leader, to establish routines that help make the program stick. For the literacy program, this means helping the school leader begin a routine observation with teachers.

Meanwhile Fellows in the the instructional leadership program will focus on planning a whole whole school learning walk routine.

A closing ceremony on the final day of the institute will be a chance to reflect on what you’ve accomplished together before celebrating as group and heading back to Entebbe to fly out.

How will I be equipped for my role?

There are three workshop days over the course of the program.

How many teachers will I support?

                                                                                                  What subjects will I teach?

After arrival in Kigali, your team will transfer to the St. Augustin Center in Rwamagana.

You’ll then co-facilitate a theory session on the science of learning and facilitate engaging sessions on classroom routines, effective explanations and student talk.

Through the week, you’ll work with teachers in their schools, using coaching to help them to embed techniques from the workshop in their classroom.

After a fulfilling first week in schools, you’ll bond as a team on safari in Akagera National Park.

Institute Week 2: Climate, Modeling & Questioning

Building on learnings from your first week, you’ll run a second workshop. You’ll co-lead an interactive session on lesson design, and practice sessions on techniques for modeling, questioning and creating a positive classroom climate.

During the week, you’ll be back in classrooms using coaching cycles to help teachers put techniques into practice.

After another productive week in schools, the team will explore the beauty and culture of Rwanda with a day trip to Lake Muhazi.

Institute Week 3: Scaffolding, Assessing & Peer Coaching

In the final workshop day, you’ll run sessions on creating a motivating classroom climate, scaffolding learning and assessment-informed teaching.
You’ll support the teachers you’ve been working with as they transition to using peer coaching to support each other on an ongoing basis.

A closing ceremony on the final day of the institute will be a chance to reflect on what you’ve accomplished together.

Before you fly out from Kigali International Airport, you’ll get the chance to celebrate as team by relaxing at the beautiful Lake Kivu.

How will I be equipped for my role?

Membership offers access to training and resources that equip you to be an Inspiring Teacher.
