To maximise impact, while keeping things simple for you, we use a ‘split payment’ when processing your Fellowship Membership Contribution. Read more.

Your Fellowship Membership Contribution splits as two parts:

  1. A tax-deductible donation that goes towards your programme and if applicable we will claim gift aid on.
  2. An excess benefit payment that covers any tangible benefits e.g. accommodation or food that are in excess of the allowable benefits for your charitable membership donation, including your Initial Membership Fee.

Based on the most recent data, for your Fellowship, we estimate we will recognise £ as an excess benefit. The remainder of your Fellowship Membership Contribution will be tax-deductible.

You don’t need to do anything and this won’t impact the process by which you pay Fellowship membership contributions.

FAQ - Your School

How can my school partner with Inspiring Teachers?

A growing number of schools now subsidize their staff member’s participation in Fellowships, using them to upskill, engage, develop and retain their staff. Our impact data shows that Fellows become more confident, motivated, and committed to teaching - as well as developing as teachers, building leadership and instructional coaching skills.

If you’d like to invite your school to partner with Inspiring Teachers, please contact us at info@inspiringteachers.org

How do I engage my school to get support?

The best way to engage your school is to share that you have secured a position on an Inspiring Teachers Fellowship with your i) Head of Professional Development or Head of Teaching & Learning, and ii) your Principal.

Your Fellowship will equate to 120 hours of high-quality leadership development, so your school is likely to be very supportive of your participation. At the very least, they will be impressed at your commitment to developing as a teacher and a leader, and at best, they may contribute towards your membership in recognition of its value as professional development.

Do I get a discount if I invite colleagues from my school?

Yes! For every teacher you recommend who goes on to become an Inspiring Teachers Fellow, both you and they will get a discount of $100 (US) or £100 (UK) off your excursions. There is no limit to the number of teachers you can recommend and your recommendations don’t have to participate in the same Fellowship location as you.

You can recommend teachers by submitting your recommendations here in your portal. They will receive an invitation to apply with you in cc. Alternatively, you can invite them directly by sharing your unique Invite Link, here. You can track all your recommendations and your savings in your portal here.

Can I engage my school for fundraising?

More and more Fellows are fundraising towards their Fellowship and/or to support local teacher participation in their program. Engaging your school can be a really effective strategy because you can leverage the school community.

What can I tell my school about the development I’ll get as a Fellow?

Your Fellowship equates to 120 hours of professional development. As well as learning about education in a new context, you will build teaching, leadership, and instructional coaching skills through a combination of learning experiences:

  • Pre-training before you depart for the Fellowship
  • Initial training on arrival led by your team leaders
  • Time in schools conducting observations and providing instructional coaching and feedback
  • Co-facilitating workshops on evidence-based professional development

Over the last 2 years, Inspiring Teachers Fellows rated us, on average, 4.3 out of 5 for professional development, with many Fellows reporting that their Fellowship is their best ever professional development.

FAQ - Fundraising

Can I fundraise towards my Fellowship membership?

Yes. There are three main ways you can fundraise. Most Fellows use some combination of them.

  1. Get a contribution from your school. In recognition of your Fellowship being high-value professional development many schools support their teachers financially. You can use the School partnerships guide and your confirmation letter to engage your Head of Teaching and Learning and your Principal/ Head Teacher.
  2. Fundraise in your school. Running a whole school initiative or charity event. There are lots of ways to do this and this fundraising guide gives you some ideas.
  3. Fundraise outside school. Engage your family and friends by sharing what you are doing, completing a challenge, organizing an event, or crowdfunding online. We provide each Fellow with branded fundraising tools so you can run a really effective online fundraising campaign.

What’s the best way to set up a Fundraising campaign?

We provide all Fellows with a fundraising campaign page which you can personalize and activate here. For additional support and advice on the best ways to fundraise contact a member of our team via LiveChat or email us at info@inspiringteachers.org

Are there any materials to help me with my campaign?

There are lots of Inspiring Teachers resources available to support you with your campaign. To get your hands on template posters, flyers, videos, logos and selected photos visit our fundraising support page.

If people ask, how do I best explain what Inspiring Teachers does?

Inspiring Teachers is a non-profit social enterprise that works to widen access to quality education. We do this by partnering with local education organisations and running evidence-based teacher training programs in high need areas. Your Fellowship forms a key part of a cross-border teacher training partnership that is designed to improve learning outcomes in low-resource settings and galvanise a teaching community.

Can I use your logos and images on my fundraising promotional materials?

Of course. Our brand pack is full of all media assets and also shares guidance on how and where to use our logo, colour palettes, imagery and visual language. If you have any further requests contact a member of our team via LiveChat.

Can I show Inspiring Teachers films at my fundraising event?

Absolutely! Take a look at our YouTube Channel where you will find lots of shorts films to help you highlight and promote our work and your fundraising.

Can I get a letter of participation to support my fundraising efforts?

Your personal letter of confirmation can also be found as an attachment in your welcome email. If for any reason you can’t locate it in your email history or via the portal, we’d be more than happy to resend it to you. To request a new confirmation letter please email: info@inspiringteachers.org

How do I know my money and donations have been received?

It can take us a couple of weeks to process your donations that are sent in the form of a cheque but online donations should be reflected immediately against your campaign. Any contributions made towards your Fellowship membership will be deducted and will be reflected in your portal. If you’re worried about anything, please get in touch via LiveChat or email.

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a scheme which allows charities to claim from back taxes that people making donations or paying membership fees have paid at source. For UK taxpayers, Gift Aid increases the value of donations by 25%, enabling taxpayers to contribute more to the causes they care about. Clicking to confirm you are happy for Inspiring Teachers to claim gift aid won’t cost you extra and enables you to maximise your impact as a Fellow. This scheme only applies to the UK.

How do I claim Gift Aid on the money I raise?

f you’ve set up an online fundraising page in the UK your donors will be asked if they’re eligible to claim Gift Aid, so you don’t need to do anything. If they’re a UK tax-payer it will be added automatically provided they select “Yes” to claiming Gift Aid.

How will the money raised be used?

How your fundraising is spent will depend entirely on the campaign you’ve run. We encourage all Fellows to set up their campaign using our 5050 model. This means 50% of the money raised goes towards your fellowship costs, and 50% goes towards supporting local teacher participation in the 11 countries we run programs.

Do you have 501c Status?

Inspiring Teachers is a UK registered nonprofit, which is equivalent to a 501C. We are in the process of registering a US-based 501C charity and we hope to be launching this sometime in 2022.

FAQ - Fellowship

I’d like to switch to a different Fellowship, is this possible?

If you’d like to switch Fellowship, please let us know as soon as possible. Providing there is availability, you will be able to switch to another location in the same cohort. If you’re undecided where you’d like to go, a great way to find out more and compare the Fellowships is in our Fellowships guide.

How many other teachers would I be travelling with?

Our Fellowships are typically made up of between 20 - 25 Fellows. Some Fellowships are slightly smaller, and some are slightly larger depending on demand and on the needs of our in-country partners and teachers. One of the highlights of the Fellowship experience is the opportunity to meet and work with a range of passionate educators from all over the world. We get really excited when we see teachers sharing ideas, learning from each other, and re-discovering their passion for education. It is an amazing environment to be in.

Can I travel independently before/after the Fellowship?

Yes, you can and many of our Fellows do take the opportunity to arrive early or stay on beyond their Fellowship. Definitely speak to your Team Leaders about this as they will be able to let you know about other Fellows who are staying on or arriving early to travel. Posting in your team’s Facebook group and on the WhatsApp group is a good way to get a group together to do this. Traveling outside of the Fellowship dates will be at your own risk and Inspiring Teachers does not accept any liability for this.

What's the accommodation like?

You’ll find information about the main accommodation, along with photos and a detailed list of the specific facilities available on the Fellowship tab in your portal. In some Fellowship locations, there is an option to upgrade to a private room or ensuite. You can check if this is available for you on the Manage my Fellowship tab.

Accommodation varies across the Fellowships but will always be safe and secure and have mosquito nets when required. There may be some nights in hotels, others in guesthouses or in dorms, and even the excitement of a camping adventure. You can discuss these in more detail with your Team Leader during your interview and any time once you’ve been accepted onto a Fellowship.

Can you cater for my specific dietary requirements?

This shouldn’t be a problem and many of our Fellows who’ve been gluten and dairy-intolerant managed just fine. Make sure you add any specific dietary requirements or food allergies in the Additional Info section of your portal so your Team Leaders can make the necessary arrangements with accommodation providers.

Depending on your specific dietary requirements, there might be other Fellowships that can better accommodate your needs. We’ll guide you towards the Fellowship that will suit you best, if necessary.

What's a typical day like?

Days on your fellowship will vary but break down into a few types.

On travel days, your team will typically look to get off to an early start so you can get to your destination before nightfall and in time for a team dinner.

Workshop days typically run from 9-4 pm with Fellows being involved in preparation before and reflection after local teachers have arrived and left. This varies location to location as we work around local teacher availabilities. At the end of the day, we usually have a group debrief session where we can talk about what went well that day, and then plan sessions for the following day.

Days in school typically involve an early start, eating lunch in school and then heading back around 4 pm after lessons end. It varies location to location but in some programs, we used shuttle runs with some fellows travelling to and from schools earlier and later.

In the evenings we typically have dinner together, and then there is the opportunity to participate in quiz nights, talent shows, workout, impromptu dance classes, or whatever other activities appeal to your Fellowship group. You can also spend your evenings relaxing and taking some time out from the group if you would prefer.

On the weekends, we plan excursions for the group (these are optional and are priced individually at Manage my Fellowship). The excursions are a lot of fun and usually happen on the weekend. They’re a great opportunity to get to know the other Fellows and have an adventure.

What will I be doing as a Fellow on the Fellowship?

During the Fellowship you will spend your time facilitating the “Institute component” of a professional development program for teachers. As a fellow, you will play the role of workshop facilitator and peer coach. The role involves teamwork to facilitate workshops and then 1-1 peer learning relationships with teachers.

  • During workshop days Fellows work together in pairs to co-facilitate sessions for a group of eight local teachers. Typically workshops occur for 1 day/week with each workshop including four sessions. Sessions are usually 1.5 hours long and will focus on a particular principle of effective teaching. This means you will be involved in collaborative planning and facilitating 10-15 sessions. Workshops are heavily focused on practice as a way of building skills and habits.
  • For in-school coaching, each Fellow works with four local teachers during their Fellowship. During days in school, you aim to observe each teacher for 15-20 minutes each day and then have a 10-15 minute peer feedback/ instructional coaching session focused on a single action step you’ve identified during your observation.

We keep our program design flexible and adaptive so that we can facilitate a training that is strategically designed to meet the needs of each individual teacher. You will receive full training and be provided with tools to support you in being effective as a Fellow.

Outside of the time spent in the classroom, there is the opportunity to participate in excursions, explore the sites and experience the culture and food of the country you are visiting.

My partner would like to join me on the Fellowship, is this possible?

To take part in a Fellowship you must be a qualified teacher. If your partner is a teacher, they’re more than welcome to apply and join you on the team. We’ve had a number of couples do a Fellowship together. If your partner is not a teacher, should they wish to come, we request that they stay elsewhere and not with the team. Our recommendation is that they join you after the Fellowship.

Are my children able to join me on the Fellowship?

Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate children on our Fellowships at this stage due to the nature of our shared accommodation. The training days on the Fellowship are also quite full-on and it would be difficult to supervise children in this environment.

FAQ - Payments

What do my payments cover?

Fellows’ financial contributions are split into a few components.

Your 5-year Inspiring Teachers membership. Once you’ve become a member you’ll have secured your position on a team and get full access to your portal. You’ll be invited to events and kept up to date through regular updates.

Your Fellowship Membership Contribution covers the in-country program. This covers everything from pre-Fellowship training, in-country orientation, accommodation and facilities, transport and food, 24-hr support, training materials, tools & logistics, school visits, and workshops.

Finally, there are excursions. Excursions are optional extras that can be added here. We recommend getting involved in the weekend activities to get the fullest experience of the location you are visiting.

Can I claim a tax deduction?

If you are a US taxpayer, you can download your receipts for the payments you have made from your portal here and may be able to claim for a tax deduction.

If I am a UK Fellow, what will Inspiring Teachers claim Gift Aid on?

If you are a UK taxpayer, to maximise your contribution, Inspiring Teachers will make a Gift Aid claim on your membership contributions.

Are flights included as part of the Fellowship membership?

Flights are not included within your Fellowship contributions. In addition to your Fellowship fee, you will need to also pay for your own flights, visa, vaccinations (if required), and travel insurance.

Excursions are a great opportunity to explore the country and experience the culture while you are there. These are priced separately, you can check these out on your Manage my Fellowship section.

I’m having problems submitting a payment on my portal. What should I do?

First, check you have a stable internet connection and double-check that the card you’re using is approved to make online payments. Some bank cards will not be accepted. If you’ve tried all the above and are still experiencing issues, then we apologize, it’s most likely a small technical hiccup on our side.

To report your problem, please start a LiveChat. If your screen is showing an error message, it’s really useful for our tech team to be able to see a screenshot to help identify the problem.

How long do payments take to process?

Online payments are processed within a few moments. If the payments aren’t reflecting in your portal after a few minutes, it could be because you need to refresh your screen.

Payments, where the email address used to make the payment is different from the email linked to your profile can take a couple of days as they require a manual step for our team.

Payments made by bank transfer or sent via cheque can take up to 7 days to process, so if you have paid using this method, please give ample time for your balance on your portal to be updated.

Likewise, any fundraising via online crowdfunding sites will not be deducted from your balance until the money is deposited into an Inspiring Teachers account, often it makes sense to complete your campaign before transferring funds across.

I recently made a payment but still got a reminder, why?

We’re sorry if this has happened. Because some of our payment reminder emails are automated and your payment may not have been processed your balance might still trigger an email reminder. If you still have concerns then please speak to a member of our team on LiveChat.

Why are the prices on my booking different to the website?

Fellowship and Excursion fees are also updated throughout the year to reflect changes in exchange rates as well as availability and other factors. Therefore, when you book your place and/or select an excursion, we fix the cost for you so you can plan. If you have questions, you can speak to a member of our team on LiveChat.

When do we pay our Fellowship Membership Contribution?

We encourage Fellows to set up regular installments to spread the cost of Fellowship Membership Contribution over a number of months. Final payment for all excursions is required 60 days before the start of your Fellowship. This enables us to finalize program plans and confirm reservations as accommodation and excursion activities. If you have any concerns about this then please speak to our team via LiveChat or email info@inspiringteachers.org

What happens if I need to cancel my place?

We do our best to support you with any problems that you have if you have to cancel. Depending on the reason for cancellation we may be able to transfer your place to another Fellowship. Please see the terms and conditions here for full information about what happens when you cancel and how you do it. We would advise you to take out comprehensive travel insurance once you have paid your membership and are accepted onto this programme to protect you if you do have to cancel. Memberships are non-refundable but you can transfer to another program.

How is my Fellowship contribution spent?

Our Fellows membership fees and contributions are the core of Inspiring Teachers’ financial sustainability model. It varies from location to location but on average, we use approximately 55% of membership contributions to operate the in-country institute component of the program and the remainder is put towards marketing, recruitment, program development, and staffing. We supplement Fellows contributions with philanthropic fundraising and income from excursions. Each year, we try to reinvest in and strengthen our program and systems to support long-term growth and impact. We do not make a profit or draw dividends.

Where can I see the full terms and conditions?

If you have any queries in relation to changes, transfers, and cancellation of your Fellowship, the best place to go for full information is our terms and conditions page here.

FAQ - Travel Info

Is travel insurance optional?

No. When travelling abroad it’s essential that you have a comprehensive travel insurance policy that provides cover for any unexpected events that may happen either before or during your trip. Whether it’s lost luggage, a last-minute change in plans (e.g. health issue or family bereavement) that prevents you from travelling, a health incident or accident that occurs while you are travelling, travel insurance is essential so you can get the help you need, when you need it while travelling.

When should I purchase travel insurance?

You should purchase your travel insurance as soon as possible after confirming your place on the Fellowship. At the latest, you should purchase travel insurance before you purchase your flights.

Provided that you choose a policy with good trip cancellation cover, you should be able to make a claim to recover the cost of your flights, programme and excursion fees if you have to cancel your trip for one of the reasons listed in your insurance policy. Most policies will have an upper limit on trip cancellation costs, so make sure you check this before choosing your policy.

What happens if I cancel and I don’t have travel insurance?

If you have a change of plans and we may be able to enable you to transfer to another Fellowship. Alternatively, if you are unable to transfer and wish to cancel our terms and conditions apply. If you have travel insurance, you may be able to recover some of the costs of cancellation.

What should I look for when selecting a travel insurance policy?

Things to check when choosing a travel insurance policy include:

  • You have the right policy for your needs (including any pre-existing health/medical issues).
  • The level of healthcare cover included in the policy. At a minimum, your policy should cover:
    • Emergency medical treatment costs, including hospital charges, ambulance fees and medical evacuation.
    • Returning you home following medical treatment abroad if you cannot use your original ticket (often referred to as “medical repatriation”).
    • Reasonable additional transport and/or accommodation expenses for a close friend or relative to stay with you or travel to escort you home if required
    • Temporary emergency dental treatment
    • 24-hour assistance helplines to offer support and advice about appropriate treatment
    • If you have pre-existing health issues, that may arise while you are away. It’s important you share any pre-existing health issues as part of the medical declaration section of your portal here.
  • The travel disruption cover provided:
    • It’s a good idea to make sure your policy covers you for the cost of cancelling your trip if you are unable to travel for any reason. Refer to our Terms & Conditions for cancellation policy.
    • Check that your policy provides cover for the full cost of your trip, including programme and excursion fees, flights and any additional costs you have incurred.
  • Cover for injury or damage you may cause to others or their possessions (called Personal and Legal Liability by most insurers).
  • If taking high-value items with you (e.g. valuable jewellery, cameras, laptops, large sums of cash) you may need to specify these items on your policy or obtain a specialist policy to provide appropriate cover for these items. Our suggestion is to minimise the amount of high-value items you bring with you - if it isn’t needed for your trip, leave it at home!
  • Check for any excesses that you have to pay when making a claim. These can be very high. It may be worth paying a little more up-front for a policy with no-excess or a reduced excess.
  • Check it covers all of the destinations and activities for your whole trip (including any stop-over locations if relevant).
  • The terms & conditions of the policy, including any exclusions (for example, many policies will exclude riding on scooters/mopeds or motorbikes, so keep that in mind during your trip and avoid those forms of transport!)
  • Many insurers do not provide cover for pandemics or epidemics, and many are now excluding cover for any claims relating to Coronavirus, as it is now classed as a “known event”. If you are concerned about Coronavirus, you may wish to purchase a “cancel for any reason” policy directly through a company like AIG Travel, Allianz Travel Insurance, Arch RoamRight, Generali Global Assistance, or Travelex.

What travel insurance company do you recommend?

Many of our Fellows use World Nomads as a well-regarded travel insurance provider. For Australians and New Zealanders, we recommend Southern Cross.

When should I book my flights?

Once Arrival and Departure dates have been confirmed for your Fellowship you’ll be notified by your Team Leaders and will see instructions in your portal. We recommend using comparison sites such as Kayak, SkyScanner or Momondo to help find the best deals. Generally, you’ll get the best deals the earlier you book. Before booking a flight, it’s important you have already purchased a travel insurance policy.

Is there a specific time I need to arrive by?

With Fellows coming from all over the world and limited flights arriving daily, all we request is that you arrive on the date requested. For some Fellows that might mean an early arrival, for others, it’ll be late at night. If arriving the day before means there are better flight routes and arrival times then please run the itinerary past your Team Leaders and they’ll most likely give you the thumbs up to arrive the day before.

Do I need vaccinations?

You will need to visit your doctor or travel clinic before you leave to make sure you have the right vaccinations. Some of the Fellowship countries will require a yellow fever certificate on arrival. Inspiring Teachers is not able to give you specific advice on which vaccinations you need. Use this link as a source of information for UK advice: www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/home

Do I need a VISA?

You will find all relevant customs and immigration information to help you arrange your visa (if required) on your Traveller Details tab in the portal. In most cases, you can purchase a visa on arrival, in some locations it needs to be arranged in advance.

Visa requirements vary depending on your nationality and where you are travelling. It is your responsibility to check the requirements and if necessary, purchase the correct visa.

Will there be someone to meet me at the airport?

Yes. Your Team Leaders will meet you at the airport and will be recognizable in branded polo shirts. As well as giving you a warm welcome, your Team Leaders will help you to find your feet and sort out things like finding an ATM and lend you a phone if you want to call/text family back home to let them know you arrived safely.

If you arrive outside of the suggested flights then you may need to make your own way to the Fellowship meeting point but your Team Leaders can discuss this with you in advance if this is the case. Normally, our Team Leaders arrive 7 days in advance of the Fellowship starting so there may be someone close by to meet you should you arrive early.

FAQ - Safe Travel

What precautions does Inspiring Teachers take to ensure Fellow safety?

Safety is our highest priority. We have 24hr emergency support from an expert safety company and on-call support from our team. You will be traveling with a group of between 15-30 Fellows and 2-3 team leaders at all times and we encourage all Fellows to stay in small groups at all times. Every Fellowship itinerary is thoroughly risk-assessed and as we work with local partners we have access to great in-country support too.

We also carefully monitor updates and any changes to government travel advice should there be any raised alerts relating to health or safety in a Fellowship location. Keeping safe is a two-way thing. Alongside all of these measures, we also ask all of our Fellows to agree to a code of conduct that is designed to help keep you safe.

Where can I find the Fellow Code of Conduct?

Every person representing Inspiring Teachers must adhere to our code of conduct at all times. You can read it in full here and it can also be found on the ‘Training & Content’ section of your portal. Your Team Leaders will cover this Code of Content and other policies during your pre-Fellowship training and initial in-country orientation.

How do I report another Fellow or Team Leader?

In the unusual and unfortunate instance that you need to report another member of your team, we want to assure you the necessary communication channels and reporting mechanisms are in place to manage such incidents. Please refer to our Safeguarding Policy for further information and advice on this topic.

FAQ - Training

What does pre-Fellowship training involve?

As an Inspiring Teachers Fellow, you will submit a pre-Fellowship Self Assessment (SAT) to measure your self-efficacy across your teaching experience. You will also complete a video-based E-Learn online before joining a team Webinar in the lead up to your Fellowship.

The purpose of the E-Learn is to accustom you to education in a low-resource context and familiarise you with our curriculum and coaching materials so you’re ready to hit the ground running when you arrive in-country.

All the training modules can be accessed via the ‘Training & Content’ section in your portal. You can complete all the modules on your own time and at your own pace.

Are there opportunities to meet other Fellows before we travel?

In the build-up to our Fellowships we host training days in the UK, US and online. These events are great opportunities to meet other Fellows, ask questions and get aligned with the organization’s goals for the Fellowship and understand in more detail your role as a Fellow. In some locations, we operate in-person pre-Fellowship training and meet-ups.

When you arrive in-country, there is time to get to know the other Fellows, your Team Leaders and in-country partners before you begin working with the in-country teachers.

What will be covered on the team Webinar?

Your team webinar will be hosted by your Team Leaders who will create time for all Fellows to introduce themselves to the rest of the team, they’ll talk through the itinerary in detail and provide time at the end for Fellows to ask questions about the program, the excursions or general travel plans. During the webinar, your Team will point you in the direction to various resources that we encourage all Fellows to read before departure.

How many hours of professional development is an LRTT Fellowship?

By participating in the Fellowship you will receive a ‘120 hours Professional Development’ certificate. This 120 hours is made up of the training you complete before you depart for the Fellowship, the time you spend conducting observations, planning for your conference days, delivering workshops during the conference days, and providing feedback to the teachers in your group. Many of our Fellows say it is the best professional development they have ever done, and a real highlight of their teaching career.

What other resources are available to help me prepare?

You’ll find a number of useful resources that will help introduce our program and overall training methodology on the ‘Training and Content’ tab in your portal. The rest of the coaching materials will be shared with you in the lead-up to your Fellowship and in-country. Your Team Leaders will also share any relevant content during your team Webinar.
